Simplicity Studio Software

Simplicity Studio is the core development environment designed to support the Silicon Labs IoT portfolio of SoCs and modules. It provides access to target device-specific web and SDK resources in the Launcher; software and hardware configuration tools; an integrated development environment (IDE) featuring industry-standard code editors, compilers and debuggers; and advanced, value-add tools for network analysis and code-correlated energy profiling.

Simplicity Studio is designed to simplify developer workflow as it intelligently recognizes all evaluation and development kits released by Silicon Labs and then makes appropriate SDKs and development resources readily available to the user.  While Simplicity Studio also provides a feature-rich Eclipse and GNU toolchain-based IDE, developers may also use the other features of Simplicity Studio in conjunction with their own development environments.

Simplicity Studio is an industry-leading suite of tools offered cost-free to developers building products with the Silicon Labs portfolio of EFM8, EFM32, EFR32, EM35x, and EFP. Simplicity Studio supports customers looking to develop both simple projects through to complex, power-optimized applications and robust mesh networks.

Introducing the LoRaWAN® and 5G Fact vs. Fiction Series

It has become clear that as 4G and 5G will target low latency and high throughput applications in the near future, LoRa and LoRaWAN-based applications will make up a larger portion of the massive IoT space, led by mobile operators, unlicensed spectrum operators and enterprises across private rollouts. The market is heading toward a Multi-Radio Access Network (Multi-RAN) strategy leveraging complementary standards, including 4G, 5G, LoRaWAN, and others such as Wi-Fi 6.

LoRaWAN: the Ideal Complement for Massive IoT Networking

LoRaWAN networks are a leading choice to support massive IoT use cases, and have become a de facto standard with analysts expecting LoRaWAN and Cellular IoT to account for more than 80 percent of the global low power wide area network (LPWAN) market by 2023.

There are many advantages in using LoRa-based applications to remotely monitor everything from assets in transit, temperatures of refrigerators or even water leaks in the home. LoRa-based use cases are expected to continue to grow and solve many specific problems that are unable to be addressed with broadband 5G. The biggest factors driving the use of the LoRaWAN protocol are its ultra-low power capabilities, the cost effective network architecture and last mile expansion, with no need to own a licensed spectrum. As a result, enterprises and operators can deploy LoRaWAN networks in any country with any business model (public, private or hybrid).

Semtech’s LoRa® Devices Leverage the Cloud to Increase Utility Efficiency

Semtech Corporation, a leading supplier of high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and advanced algorithms, announced that a state-of-the-art metering solution based on Semtech’s LoRa® devices has been developed as part of the MeDa project for one of Germany’s leading energy companies with Seluxit, a leading developer of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. The MeDa meter leverages a number of the advantages of the LoRaWAN® protocol enabling consumers to change wasteful energy habits and save money.

“Seluxit chose Semtech’s LoRa platform due to the number of significant advantages the platform provides for the smart metering vertical market,” said Daniel Lux, Co-Founder and CEO at Seluxit. “LoRa allows our customers to more closely monitor how they are consuming utilities in real-time. Shortly after installing one of our LoRa-based smart metering solutions, like the MeDa meter, customers typically get insight into their energy consumption pattern, which enables them to change appliances and/or habits and see a reduction in energy waste and total cost. As a global key supplier for the smart metering market, Seluxit is committed to providing solutions that reduce energy waste and create more sustainable energy grids worldwide.”

The MeDa meter leverages LoRa-based solutions from Seluxit to provide real-time data monitoring of energy usage and proven connectivity to the Cloud for long-range data transfer. Additionally, Seluxit’s modem encrypts all data transfers as an element of compliance with Germany’s data security and privacy regulations. The meter’s long range capabilities allow end users to monitor energy usage remotely, even in large high-rise buildings. By closely monitoring energy consumption, customers can change wasteful energy habits and reduce their energy-related spending.

The MeDa smart meter solution uses a proprietary protocol stack that not only uses LoRa modulation for long range, but also FSK modulation at shorter distances, at a higher data rate. This is possible due to the versatility of the Semtech hardware. The higher data rate provides the end user even more detailed information about their energy consumption. The same hardware as used in the MeDa project will support LoRaWAN later this year.

“LoRaWAN is quickly becoming the de facto leader for IoT, and its long range, low power and ease of integration into existing infrastructure are clear advantages in the smart metering space,” said Marc Pegulu, Vice President of IoT for Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “For developers and system integrators, LoRaWAN simplifies development and accelerates IoT applications to market.”
